How Homeopathy can help soothe colic pain in babies and adults

What is colic and who gets it?

Colic is a type of pain that begins and end abruptly. It usually occurs due to contractions in some hollow tube [such as the ureter, colon, etc].
It’s usually associated with babies but it occurs even in adults. In babies, it is seen in the form of uncontrollable and excessive crying for no apparent reasons.
In adults, colic pain is usually present in the abdominal area. It increases and decreases, comes and goes and then finally comes to an end. It may be a one-time thing or may recur after intervals.

    Colic in babies

Infants usually cry a lot. They do it to convey hunger, thirst, pain and other problems. But they cry even more when suffering from colic pain. It becomes difficult to pacify them when they are crying due to colic because there is no apparent reason for their cries. If there is no reason, you are unable to cure it.
It’s not something rare because one fifth kids develop colic, usually between the second and fourth week.
Symptoms (other than the incessant crying) include passing gas and distended stomach. While no one is completely sure about what causes colic, there are a few speculations:

    • Allergy to food
    • Over or under-feeding
    • Buildup of gas
    • Digestive problems

These speculations are derived from the symptoms that show intestinal or digestive problems.

    Colic in adults

Colic in adults occurs as a sharp pain that is spasm-like and usually begins around the gastrointestinal area. This can happen repeatedly or as a one-time occurrence.
A blockage in one of the tubes may lead to a muscle contracting around the object and that is speculated as the reason for pain.
There are 3 different types of colic pain in adults:

    1. Biliary Colic

Biliary colic is caused by the presence of gallstones. Hardened bile juice forms stone-like substances and block various ducts. These blockages not only cause inflammation but also issues with digestion.
Pain usually starts in the center of the abdomen or under the right breastbone.

    2. Renal Colic

Renal colic is often associated with kidney or urinary stones. 1 in 10 people worldwide are affected by this problem.
These stones form between the kidneys and the urethra. The pain and symptoms depend on the size of the stone. The pain is also mostly focused in the area near the stone.

    3. Intestinal Colic

Intestinal colic is the result of a blockage in your intestines. The blockage is usually of food or drink that is unable to pass through the intestines.
This blockage can occur due to a wide variety of reasons such as Crohn’s disease, scar tissue from surgery, cancerous tumors and others.
