Malaria is an infectious disease caused by mosquitoes. If not treated properly, some people also experience a recurrence of the illness months later. However, the symptoms are usually milder the second time around.
It’s a good thing that malaria can be combated with homeopathic medicines, enabling people to treat themselves gently.
What causes Malaria?
Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite. The parasite spreads and infects humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. There are numerous types of this parasite but only five of them cause malaria in humans.
- Plasmodium falciparum
- Plasmodium vivax
- Plasmodium ovale
- Plasmodium malariae
- Plasmodium knowlesi
How is Malaria spread?
The plasmodium parasite is spread by the female Anopheles mosquito. These mosquitoes are also known as “night-biting” mosquitoes because they usually bite between dusk and dawn.
If a mosquito bites a malaria-infected person, then it can also become infected. Fortunately, malaria doesn’t spread directly from person to person.
Once a person is bitten, the parasite enters the bloodstream and reaches the liver. The infection first develops in the liver before the parasite re-enters the bloodstream and invades the red blood cells.
The parasites then proceeds to grow and multiply in the red blood cells. The infected blood cells burst at regular intervals, releasing more parasites into the blood. Infected blood cells usually burst every 48-72 hours. Every time they burst, the infected patient will have to suffer a bout of fever, chills and sweating.
Malaria can also spread through blood transfusions and sharing needles, but it is rather rare.
Symptoms of Malaria
Symptoms of malaria can develop about 7-18 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, depending on the specific parasite you’re infected with. However, sometimes, it may take up to a year for the symptoms to develop.
The initial symptoms of malaria are flu-like and include:
- a high temperature of 38 °C or above
- feeling hot and shivery
- muscle pains
- generally feeling unwell
However, these symptoms are often mild and can’t always be identified as malaria.
With some types of malaria, the symptoms occur in cycles of 48-hours. Here’s what happens during these cycles:
- Feeling cold, shivering
- A high temperature, accompanied by severe sweating and fatigue.
These symptoms usually last between 6 and 12 hours.
The most deadly type of malaria is caused by Plasmodium falciparum parasite. Without immediate treatment, it could lead to you developing severe, life-threatening complications, such as breathing problems and organ failure.
